Bear Creek is so excited to welcome author/illustrator Jarrett Krosoczka to our school on November 18, 2015! He will present to all of our students PreK-5th grade! The students have been preparing for his visit by checking out his books and coming to the learning commons to hear read alouds of Mr. Krosoczka's books from Mrs. Johnson! Our students love Mr. Krosoczka's books! Remember you can order books for Mr. Krosoczka to sign the day he visits! Order forms and money are due by FRIDAY, November 6. The 2nd annual book character pumpkin patch is looking great in the learning commons. Remember the rules before you bring your pumpkin to school!
1. Your pumpkin cannot be carved. It could attract bugs or other critters, and it could rot and make the learning commons stinky. 2. Your pumpkin should be a book or comic book character. 3. Pumpkins are due by Wednesday, October 28. 4. Pumpkins need to be taken home on Monday, November 2. Remember to be creative! We hope to fill the learning commons with book character pumpkins before October 28! Bear Creek, along with the rest of the district, has subscribed to a digital management system called MackinVIA. You can access all of Bear Creek's ebooks, audio books, and databases at home!
International Dot Day is celebrated every year on September 15 across the world! It is inspired by the book The Dot by Peter H Reynolds and is a celebration of creativity, courage, and collaboration. Lots of classes celebrated Dot Day 2015 in the learning commons a BCES this year! We had Mrs. Doughney, Mrs. Varcardipone, Mrs. Walker, Ms. Deering, Mrs. Elsen, Mrs. Vitek, and Mrs. Sampson! They all Skyped with classes at other schools and shared their dots here the learning commons! Several other classes celebrated in their classrooms as well. I am so proud of our students for making their mark in the world! Hope to see lots more dots for next year's annual Dot Day celebration!
The week of April 14-17 I was in Austin attending the Texas Library Association's annual conference! I will attempt to condense the week into a single blog post :)
Tuesday - Tuesday was my first day there and the day I attended the second annual Tech Camp. Tech Camp is the place to be for librarians who want to learn more about using technology in new and innovative ways at school. The major theme of Tech Camp this year was don't be afraid to fail! It will make you stronger! Wednesday - Wednesday was the official opening of TLA 15. I got lots of free books at the opening of the exhibit hall! I have given many away to students and teachers already! Thursday - Thursday's highlights include an awesome Googlepalooza from the librarians in Round Rock ISD. I learned lots of Google tricks! Thursday was also the Bluebonnet Award Luncheon which is always a huge highlight of TLA! The winning book this year was The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt and illustrated by Oliver Jeffers. Both were on hand and made heartwarming speeches about how librarians have influenced their careers. Friday - On Friday I attended two sessions that introduced new books of interest for kids and tweens! I will order some really awesome books thanks to these two sessions! As always, TLA is the best place to connect in person with other librarians from across the state! I always learn so many new things. I also love that I can learn from sessions I was not able to attend thanks to Google Docs and Twitter! I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to attend and can't wait for next year!
Attention 4th and 5th graders! Some of you read One for the Murphy's by Lynda Mullaly Hunt for Global Read Aloud last Fall. If you are a fan of that book, enter this contest to win a signed copy! Mrs. Johnson will randomly pick a winner on April 23! Click HERE to get the form if you don't see it below.
UPDATE: And the winner is......Brianna Puryear in Mrs. Parker-Elson's class!!! On February 10, several GCISD librarians were lucky enough to tour the Makerspaces at Sigler Elementary and Christie Elementary in Plano ISD and Lamar Middle in Lewisville ISD. We were blown away by all of the wonderful things happening in these libraries. Libraries truly are more than just books. These libraries have created learning spaces full of all sorts of STEM activities in which the students can create, build, collaborate, and make things with everything from cardboard boxes to electric circuits. We saw coding stations, building materials, iPad activities, Lego walls, augmented reality, and so much more. With the changes we are making in our libraries in GCISD, this field trip really inspired me to continue to change and improve the library here at Bear Creek. I will be creating a Donor's Choose account to help with funding. I will also be asking Bear Creek's awesome parents for donations as well. Our library is scheduled to get fresh paint and new carpet this summer. We are also in the process of getting new, moveable furniture so it will be a perfect way to start fresh with a new, creative, flexible space. I would like to thank all the people involved in our eye opening field trip: Matt Arend at Sigler; Ryan Steele, Jess Malloy, and Mike Svatek at Christie; Colleen Graves at Lamar; and Tina Berumen and Suzanne Newell at GCISD for facilitating the event.
