BCES Library is celebrating the new year with lots of new books! A big order of new books arrived over the break, and Mrs. Johnson is so excited for Bear Creek students to start reading them! New books include the entire Lunch Lady series by Jarrett Krosoczka, the remainder of the Origami Yoda series by Tom Angleberger, Middle School series by James Patterson, the entire Amulet series by Kazu Kibuishi, picture books by Peter Brown, new Squish and Babymouse books by Jenni Holm and Matt Holm, and MUCH MUCH more! In addition to the new books, there are 2 new Maker Stations in the library! At the pixel art station, students can make pictures with the little plastic pixels. Picture challenges get harder and harder the further you go! At the Spirograph station, students can make awesome spiral designs! We hope BCES students love the new additions to the library as much as Mrs. Johnson does!

We had such a great time today with Cowboy Santa in the library! He read Texas Night Before Christmas and sang Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer! The students got to hum along with kazoos that Santa brought for them. Some of the older kids sang along and got candy canes. We even broadcast Cowboy Santa live through our KBCE channel on Safari Montage for those classes that weren't able to come to the library to see him. Thank you so much, Cowboy Santa for visiting Bear Creek Library!Thank you to all the awesome Bear Creek students, teachers, and families who helped to make our fall book fair a great success! I couldn't have done it without my wonderful volunteers and awesome team here at Bear Creek. We were able to get lots of new books for the library, and we will be getting new library furniture sometime in the Spring! Be on the lookout in April for the Spring book fair!Congratulations to 3rd graders Maaha and Eshan for being the first students to read 25 books! What an accomplishment, and it's only November! I wonder how many books they will read total this year... Remember to keep recording the number of books you read this year even after you pass 25, so we all know your grand total for the whole year! We are so proud of all of our 25 book challenge participants and can't wait to see how many students can read 25 books (or more)! Keep up the good work, Bear Creek Students!
Our storybook character pumpkin patch is beginning to grow in the library! We have a few pumpkin characters already including BabyMouse, Curious George, and Pete the Cat! Mrs. Johnson will be bringing hers on Monday. We hope to see lots more awesome pumpkin characters before the end of the month! Great job, Bear Creek Champs! See the rules below if you would like to enter a pumpkin! Since the old library computers have been cleared out, we now have room for a MakerSpace at Bear Creek library! We are starting small with a bookmark making station and a puzzle station. We hope to add to these 2 stations as the year progresses! We will gladly accept donations of Legos, K'nex, anything that students can make things with! Email Mrs. Johnson at [email protected] if you have any questions or would like to donate something.
*Last week Bear Creek library was a busy place! Lots of fun things going on! All of 3rd grade came in to the library to download and log in to the new MackinVia platform on their iPads! Mrs. Johnson also went into several 1st grade classrooms to help them with MackinVia as well. Bear Creek is very excited to have access to such wonderful resources all in one place! Students will be able to access all of our eBooks and database with one click through MackinVia. *Some students came into the library and were very surprised to see that the library computers were gone! Now that all of our students have iPads, they can search the library catalog by clicking on the "catalog and databases" tab at the top of this page or by downloading the Destiny Quest app from the app store. So students, remember to bring your iPads to the library! The newly cleared out space where the computers used to be will be used for maker stations! More info to come on that soon! *Kindergarten and 1st graders got to hear Mrs. Johnson read The Day the Crayons Quit written by Drew Daywalt and illustrated by Oliver Jeffers. They are participating in the #SupportTheCrayons campaign because we want the crayons to stay! The students are coloring lovely pictures for the crayons and doing what the crayons asked Duncan to do in the story, because we love our crayons, and we want them to be happy! We only have a few days left to talk them into staying, so let's try our best to convince them to stay! *The final wonderful thing that happened last week at Bear Creek library was that Mrs. Johnson was able to attend a very special day of learning with one of the most exceptional school librarians in the U.S: Shannon Miller! Shannon is from Iowa, and inspires librarians all over to "be the change" in our libraries. Her tips on technology and collaboration have given Mrs. Johnson great ideas for the year to come! Thanks to Shannon and the 4 other school districts who participated in this awesome day.
Last week marked International Dot Day, a day based on the book, The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. The Dot teaches all of us to make our mark on the world! Bear Creek students really made their marks! In the library, we connected two of our classes through Skype with other classes to share the dots that we made. Mrs. Doughney's Kindergarteners connected with a 1st grade class at Cannon Elementary to share their dots. Ms. Rhea, Ms. Nolan, and Ms. Husby's special education classes connected with special education classes in El Paso and shared their dots with each other! All of the students were so creative and the Skype sessions couldn't have gone better. Can't wait to make more connections! Last week was an awesome week at BCES library! EVERY class came to the library and got to check out books! The students got to see the new library procedures with the new checkout station I created. K-2nd grades heard from that ornery Pigeon about how to care for library books. 3rd-5th grades heard all about the awesome GCISD 25 book challenge and the Bluebonnet program. For more information on these programs, click the tabs at the top of this website! Some brave 5th graders agreed to be actors in our "how to" videos that were shown to all the classes. Check out the @BCESLib Twitter feed at the bottom of this page to see some tweets from some of the classes that visited last week. Below you can check out the Prezis that the students saw to learn the new library procedures. First I want to say how excited I am to be at Bear Creek Elementary! I'm sure everyone would love to know how I ended up here. So here it goes...I'm originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, but only lived there until I was in 3rd grade. My family moved all over the US including Kentucky, Illinois, and Texas. I went to college at University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) for my bachelor's degree and ended up staying in El Paso for 17 years. I taught 4th grade for 9 years. Then I decided I wanted to be a librarian and got my master's degree in library science from Texas Woman's University (TWU). I worked 3 years as a librarian in an elementary school in El Paso. I'm so happy to be back in this part of Texas to be closer to my family and my husband's family. I can't wait to meet all the wonderful students I've heard such great things about at Bear Creek!
